Your Weight Loss Journey and Physical Therapy in Cheyenne, WY

Your Weight Loss Journey and Physical Therapy in Cheyenne, WY
Almost 100 million Americans are considered overweight and it is never a journey to go alone. It often is never as simple as eating right and exercising, especially when your body adjusts to a certain weight or you have health issues that make it difficult to lose. The journey to live a healthier lifestyle is not one to go alone and you can definitely work with Cheyenne, WY physical therapy to help. Here are the top tips to get started and when you may need to turn to a physical therapist to make exercise easier.

  1. Mindset: Getting you mind in the right place to being a weight loss journey is the best way to get started. It may be one of the most important things you do. Many people are overwhelmed and think they must drastically cut calories and have intense workouts, when in fact, if you aren’t eating enough for your body, it could lead the weight to stay. When beginning your weight loss journey, start small. Determine small changes you can make and work on them, even if it is just one thing at a time. Maybe you are a heavy soda drinker and you make the transition to diet soda or water. Or perhaps you make the effort to walk each day for 30 minutes. When you try to overwhelm yourself and do too much at once out of your comfort zone, you increase your chances of giving up and gaining more weight back.
  2. Nutritional Counseling: One of the great things about working with a local physical therapist on your weight loss journey is personalized nutritional counseling. They will help you change your habits and create plans that will work for your lifestyle. These healthier food choices will take in consideration your medical history, exercise levels and all other lifestyle habits. This will help you to stay on track and have the accountability and support you need.
  3. Physical Therapy: Incorporating physical therapy into your weight loss routine will help you define what your physical abilities are and will help you get to where you want to be. After taking into consideration your BMI (body mass index) and your measurements, your physical therapist can help you find the exercise that you can handle. Joint pain, current exercise, medical history and any ailments will be taken into consideration. From there, you will have help in a variety of ways from being on a cardiovascular or strength training program, to learning proper conditioning and stretching techniques to strengthen the quality of your muscles. Pool therapy is another technique used in physical therapy that is much easier and less impactful on your joints and can be a successful way to help you lose weight. This method is great as it puts less stress on your body and also may help reduce swelling to encourage muscle strengthening.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and How a Physical Therapist in Cheyenne, WY Can Relieve Symptoms

August 24, 2016

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and How a Physical Therapist in Cheyenne, WY Can Relieve Symptoms
Around 5 million Americans have carpal tunnel syndrome and try to overcome their daily pain. The upside of this ailment is the ability to get better! Once diagnosed, a doctor or physical therapist in Cheyenne, WY can work with a patient for a track back to a pain-free quality of life. Learn more about carpal tunnel syndrome and the best ideas and aspects to overcome it.

The Basics: Once the carpal tunnel of the hand and wrist becomes swollen or pinched, this syndrome can occur. In Web MD’s article “A Visual Guide to Carpal Tunnel,” they explain the carpal tunnel is a small passageway of bones and ligaments from your palm to side of your wrist. The middle nerve controls sensation and movement for your thumb and first three fingers. When you need your hands every day, it can get very painful when the nerve is pinched and symptoms occur. It can really leave a negative impact and is best to resolve quickly. Especially because overtime if gone untreated, the condition can worsen.

Symptoms: Carpal tunnel syndrome causes a tingly, numb or general pain in your thumb and/or first three fingers. Healthline explains in the article “Carpal Tunnel,” some of the other top symptoms include a pain and burning that extends in your arm and wrist pain. It can also make the hand muscles weak and painful.

Risk Factors: Many associate carpal tunnel syndrome with those who sit at a desk and type all day. While that is possible, there are many reasons people get carpal tunnel syndrome. One of the top reasons people get this condition are repetitive wrist motions throughout their day. This can include those at a desk, as well as construction workers and warehouse or assembly line workers. Healthline adds that women get this condition more than men. Commonly, it occurs in people ages 30 to 60. Those who smoke, have a high sodium intake, sedentary lifestyle and are overweight Healthline says are at the most risk.

Diagnosis and Physical Therapy: If experiencing these symptoms, your local doctor can diagnose and get you on the track to improvement. For some, surgery may be needed. For others, doctors may provide medication and go-to exercises to improve it. Many have also achieved normal feeling in their hand because of physical therapy. They work with patients on specific exercises for restoration. Results can be as quick as six months. Another great aspect is being able to learn ways to treat at home and ways to avoid this condition in the future. While painful, there is a great recovery success rate.

If you have significant pain in your wrist, hand or elbow, North Platte Physical Therapy can help. Benign Positional Vertigo: What Is It and How Physical Therapy in Cheyenne, WY Can Help

August 3, 2016

Benign Positional Vertigo: What Is It and How Physical Therapy in Cheyenne, WY Can Help
Many people associate physical therapy with injuries from an accident or playing sports—but that is not the case! Cheyenne, WY physical therapy can assist with much more that you may not have considered. One of those areas is benign positional vertigo. You may not even realize you have this issue! There is hope! The good news is—if you have it, relief is possible to improve the quality of your life.
  • What is Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV)?: BPV is one of the most common types of vertigo, according to the Mayo Clinic. This condition creates the feeling that you or your head feels like it is suddenly spinning. The Mayo Clinic explains those with this condition may experience brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness and occurs after specific positions of your head. For some it is so minor and manageable, but for others, it can be so negatively impactful to lead to an increase chance of falling down.
  • Symptoms: BPV has a variety of symptoms. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains those with BVP experience a spinning feeling, either that the person is spinning or everything else is spinning around you. Other symptoms include balance loss, nausea and vomiting, hearing loss and vision issues. One of the top reasons for this “spinning sensation” is usually triggered by certain head movements that you may do without realizing it.  These can start suddenly and last for a few seconds or minutes. Rolling over while in bed or tilting your head up also can cause this sensation.
  • Causes: The Mayo Clinic says BPV often occurs with people who have experienced a minor to sever blow to the head but in rare cases, have occurred with people that may have undergone surgery or a long dental visit with prolonged positioning of the back. Migraines are also associated with those who suffer from BPV.
  • When to Seek Care: If you experience dizziness or vertigo that you can’t explain for over a week, talk to your doctor. Also, while rare, the Mayo Clinic explains dizziness can be a sign of a serious illness. If you experience dizziness and an unusual or severe headache, fever, double or loss of vision, hearing loss, trouble with speaking, weakness in a leg or arm, loss of consciousnesses, falling or issue walking or numbness and tingling, it is best to seek care as soon as possible.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy may be recommended to help with BPV to create relief for those that suffer with this condition. Cheyenne, WY physical therapy will use responsive techniques and maneuvers to help you overcome your BPV. This may include a series of head positions repeated over and over.

If you suffer from BPV, North Platte Physical Therapy can help!
