Living with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions can change the way you interact with the world, often causing everyday movements and gestures to become smaller and slower. NPPT understands how frustrating it can be when simple tasks like getting out of a chair, buttoning a shirt, or walking confidently become challenging. Our certified therapists offer LSVT BIG®, a highly specialized, research-backed physical and occupational therapy program designed specifically to help you use your body more normally. By teaching you to “recalibrate” how you perceive your own movements, LSVT BIG® empowers you to apply the right amount of effort to produce the bigger, safer motions needed to navigate your daily life with confidence and independence.
The goal of LSVT BIG® is to translate the exercises done in the clinic into real-world, everyday activities. Research funded by the National Institutes of Health has shown that LSVT BIG® can lead to significant improvements, including:
LSVT BIG® is an intensive, amplitude-focused treatment delivered one-on-one by an LSVT BIG® Certified Clinician. Because Parkinson’s disease creates a mismatch between what you feel you are doing and what you are actually doing, this therapy effectively trains your neuromuscular system to recognize when your movements are too small. Through repetitive, whole-body exercises, you will relearn how “normal” movement should feel. The treatment is holistic and entirely tailored to your own physical abilities, addressing both the motor and non-motor symptoms of your condition.
Because LSVT BIG® is customized to your specific needs and goals, it can help you regardless of the stage or severity of your condition. However, the absolute best time to start is right now. The treatment is highly effective in the early or middle stages of Parkinson’s, when you can both improve your current function and potentially slow the progression of motor symptoms.
